From CNN:
“I’m concerned about what an avian flu outbreak could mean for the United States and the world,” he told reporters during a Rose Garden news conference.
Such an deadly event would raise difficult questions, such as how a quarantine might be enforced, he said.
“One option is the use of a military that’s able to plan and move,” he said. “So that’s why I put it on the table. I think it’s an important debate for Congress to have.”
In the past few weeks, there has been much talk about Martial Law. With two category 5 hurricanes hitting within weeks of each other and the horrible aftermath in New Orleans after the first of those hurricanes, Katrina, the idea of military involvement has been thrown about. Now this.
Chairman Bush has brought up martial law a little too much lately. My suspicious motive meter has been going red, and the sirens are blaring. I don’t care what anyone says, this guy doesn’t give a damn about the Constitution or your liberties. He’s looking for any excuse he can find to take them away from you.
Of course no one seems to really have noticed this yet, since everyone is too preoccupied with his latest Supreme Court Nomination. The way he’s going, there won’t be a Supreme Court by the time she’s confirmed.
Sooner or later, the three monkey types that begged me to vote for him will understand why I refused. I just wish it were later.
I agree.
Yes, this potential pandemic is indeed scary. But there’s just too much talk about using the troops on American soil. And strangely enough, almost NO talk about using them to do their job — and secure the darn borders!
Vox addressed this rather well over at his blog today. 60 people dead from bird flu in 18 months, yet activity that puts people at risk of AIDS is encouraged.
