Taking Ron Shank’s recommendation, I tried out KeePass. This is a pretty cool application that I’d recommend already, even though I haven’t really used it much yet. It will keep all your passwords in an encrypted database, so you only need to remember the password that is needed to get into KeePass. It works on a thumb drive too, so you can take it with you. And since it’s encrypted, you don’t really need to worry about having your thumb drive get lost or stolen.
I also really like Portable Firefox and Portable Thunderbird. You put them on a portable drive like a USB thumb drive or iPod and can take them with you, preserving your themes, extensions, bookmarks, and everything else unique to your installation.
I am knowingly quite behind the times on portable apps, but I’m glad I finally gave them a shot. I picked up a 512 MB thumb drive this morning for about $25, and really like it.
If you use more than one Windows computer regularly, this is definitely worth the effort to get going. There are also several more applications available at portableapps.com, including OpenOffice and Clamwin, an open source antivirus program.
