I didn’t catch most of President Bush’s acceptance speech last night, but it doesn’t sound like I missed much. I guess he promised to overhaul the tax system and Social Security.
But Bush’s domestic agenda for the next four years was hardly the program of someone who wants to shrink the role of the federal government. He offered new initiatives for building medical centers in poor areas of the country as well as increased spending in education – an area of the federal government earmarked only eight years ago by Republicans for elimination.
The best way to overhaul the tax system and Social Security is to eliminate them. There is a good reason why they were never included in the original Constitution. In fact, Social Security was never added to the powers given government by the Constitution, and it’s debatable whether the income tax ever was.
