I’m not much of a beer drinker, but I think I’ll start drinking more Guinness on the rare occasion I do indulge in a brewsky. Joe Carter of The Evangelical Outpost has been doing a series that I mentioned once before called Know Your Evangelicals. In his most recent post, he talked about Os Guinness, who Joe says is a member of the Guinness Beer-making Family. Mr. Guinness has used the proceeds of his family’s fortune to found the Trinity Forum, an Evangelical Christian organization that “strives to encourage and assist national leaders to deepen, integrate, and apply their faith in their private and public lives”.
Whether or not money from the Guinness Family Fortune still goes to support the Trinity Foundation or not, I’m overall impressed with what I learned today.
Next time you buy a beer, make it a Guinness!!
Guinness is good for you.
That’s excellent news – I’m headed downstairs for a pint right now. I wonder how this will go over in the hardline fundamentalist crowd who view any sort of alcohol a mortal sin…
Well, I consider myself to be fundamentalist. I see nowhere in the scriptures that Christians are not supposed to drink alcohol. There are passages forbidding drunkenness, but Jesus himself turned water into wine, so drink up – but stay sober!!
@andy:
agreed.
@zod:
the whole anti-alcohol, anti-dancing, etc., thing is (i think) more of a cultural/regional (read: man-made) matter than a Christian one, per se. Not all fundamentalists, even hard-liners, see dancing as evil or alcohol as unholy water. Things like alcohol are not in and of themselves, and when moderately enjoyed, bad. It is, as with all things in life, when these things are abused/misused that they become “sinful”… but even then, it’s not that the alcohol has become sinful but that it has been used in a sinful act. It is the person who is already sinning that “makes” the alcohol sinful.
Wow, how did I miss this one? I try to keep up with companies and their support. For example, I will not work at BankAmerica (the largest employer in this region) because of their gay-friendly policies, actions, and support. And I’ve bought stock in Coke because of their excellent record.
For today’s beer run I’ll be sure to get some more Guinness!
